Sydney Markets has spearheaded a drive to bring alive the cultural diversity of Sydney through a Community Relationship Programme aimed at showcasing different community groups throughout their markets, including Sydney Fresh Food Market, Sydney's Paddy's Markets and Sydney Swap and Sell Market.

Sydney Markets research showed a large portion of their customers were made up of over 25 cultural backgrounds consisting of new immigrants and second and third generation ethnic Australians.

"The community markets at both Flemington and Haymarket have always been the melting pot for multiculturalism," confirmed Retail Marketing Manager, Kerrie Reeder.

The Community Relationship Program me will see Sydney Markets host a major cultural event each month at its 41 hectare site at Flemington for the next 12-months with events being celebrated at the Sydney Fresh Food Market, as well Sydney's Paddy's Markets Flemington and Haymarket and the Sydney Swap and Sell Market.

|Celebrations will occur mainly during Paddy's trading days and Sydney Fresh Food Market, but scheduling will include events during the mid-week markets including the Sydney Produce Market, Sydney Flower Market and the Sydney Growers Market.

This programme was launched in July with the South Pacific Islanders celebrating the Tongan King's Birthday which saw thousands of people participate in a celebration never seen before at the markets.

"Our next event is Carnivale which will include ten of these cultural events over fourteen days with entertainment in all markets," said Ms Reeder.

"People will be able to experience rich traditions and the culture of people from all over the world, which is a true reflection of both the shoppers and the traders."

Sydney Markets will showcase these cross-cultural events each month which will give the public of Sydney the opportunity to experience performances both global and local, in a true community style.

"Whether it is Chinese New Year or Korean Children's Day, the public will be able to join in and celebrate with the various community groups involved in collating this intensive community relations programme."

The markets are buoyant with multiculturalism, with traders ranging from Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Lebanese, Greek, Italian, Islanders, Africans, Maltese and Turkish.

The Community Relationship Programme will bring together different cultures through working with community groups within the Sydney region.
